Use case
Regulars on the phone, without the app's cut
An order on your own phone number carries no app commission. Paying an app to find a new customer can be worth it; paying it every week for a regular is harder to defend.
Zogu greets returning callers by first name and puts "same as last time" back on, checked against today's menu. It's still on our integration platform's test system, so this page has a sum for your own figures and the apps' published rates, not results.
Commission on customers you'd won
Each app charges on every order placed through it, for as long as the customer orders that way. On a regular's 50th large pepperoni, you're paying again for someone you won years ago.
A direct phone order costs about as much as a walk-in. The catch is that someone has to answer, and on a Friday night the phone rings out and the regular opens the app. Zogu is built for that call. If unanswered calls are the problem, see missed phone orders in the rush.
What a regular hears
The first Zogu order is an ordinary phone order. Next time, Zogu knows the caller's number, greets them by first name and already has the name for the order. A repeat order from our automated tests, on a pizza test menu (test shop name cut; "pickup" stands in for the word it used):
Zogu: "Hi James, welcome back, you're through to the automated ordering assistant. What can I get for you today?"
Caller: "Same as last time please."
Zogu: "Same as last time, for pickup. Two Large Margheritas with Thin Crust, twenty-one pounds ninety-eight. One cola, one pound fifty. Anything else?"
Caller: "No, that's it."
Zogu: "Would you like a side? We've got Garlic Bread, Chips or Chicken Wings."
Caller: "No thanks."
Zogu: "So that's two Large Margheritas with Thin Crust and one cola, for pickup, under the name James. The total is twenty-three pounds forty-eight, paid on pickup. Shall I place the order?"
Caller: "Yes please."
Four answers, no spelling, one read-back. If something from last time is off the menu, Zogu says so and offers the closest alternatives.
- Only earlier Zogu phone orders count, and withheld numbers aren't looked up.
- The side offer is an add-on: at most two, only once the caller is done, and you can switch them off. See how the add-on offers work.
- More on how Zogu greets returning customers and repeats their last order.
Run the sum
| Line | What goes in | Made-up example |
|---|---|---|
| A | App orders a week from repeat customers | 40 |
| B | Average value of those orders | 25 |
| C | Your commission rate, from your invoice | 30% |
| D | Commission each week (A × B × C) | 300 |
| E | How many you think would come by phone | 10 |
| F | Commission you'd keep each week (E × B × C) | 75 |
| G | Costs that move to you: card fees, your own driver | Your figures |
| H | What Zogu costs for the week | Not set yet |
| What's left: F minus G minus H |
For line A, count the names you know in a week of app tickets. In the UK, if you're not VAT-registered, a 30% rate costs you 36%. Line E is a guess, so be hard on yourself. In the example, 75 a week is 3,900 a year, before card fees and Zogu's price, which isn't set yet.
What the apps publish
List prices on each app's own pages, checked on 5 November 2026. Your invoice beats this table.
| App | Market | What its own page says | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uber Eats | UK | 30% with Uber's couriers (33% on Uber One orders), 13% if you deliver or on pickup, plus VAT | Uber Eats UK pricing |
| Deliveroo | UK | No standard rate; set in your agreement. The one figure given is 35% plus VAT, for Marketplace+ with Deliveroo's riders | Deliveroo UK partner terms |
| Just Eat | UK | Left out: we couldn't open its partner page to check | |
| DoorDash | US | 15%, 25% or 30% on delivery by plan, 6% on pickup | DoorDash pricing |
| Uber Eats | US | 20% (15% in some cities), 25% or 30% on delivery, 15% if you deliver, 7% on pickup | Uber Eats US pricing |
| Grubhub | US | 5%, 15% or 20% marketing commission, plus at least 10% for its drivers; payment processing extra | Grubhub Marketplace |
Use the pickup rate where it applies. A call to your own number pays none of these.
What you give up
Zogu won't bring you new customers. The apps are good at that, and nothing here says leave them.
- Delivery means your own drivers. Zogu checks the postcode against your delivery areas and offers pickup outside them. Delivery has only run in our automated tests. See pickup and delivery orders by phone.
- Payment on pickup or delivery. Zogu never takes card details. Pay by texted link is built but switched off.
- No app discounts. A deal set up as a menu item can still be ordered.
- English only. The rest is on what Zogu doesn't do.
Give regulars the right number
For now Zogu answers its own number for your shop; forwarding your existing line hasn't been done with a real restaurant yet. Put the Zogu number on the printed menu, the takeaway bag, the window and your website, and tell regulars when they pick up.
Keep your shop number for everything else. Zogu doesn't transfer calls or promise call-backs, and points complaints back to the restaurant.
Check that the number people find is yours. A 2019 lawsuit claimed Grubhub showed its own numbers in place of restaurants' and charged for calls over 45 seconds; Grubhub said the case was without merit (The Takeout, 20 May 2019).
Where Zogu is today
As of 5 November 2026, Zogu has only taken test calls from our own team on our integration platform's test system. No restaurant uses it, it works only with the POS systems we connect to, there's one US test number, and the price isn't set. More on the Zogu for UK takeaways and restaurants and Zogu for US restaurants pages.
Questions and answers
Do phone orders pay commission to Just Eat, Deliveroo or DoorDash?
No, as long as the customer calls your own number. Check the number people find for you is yours, not one an app put on its listing.
Will Zogu bring me new customers?
No. It answers people who already have your number.
Will Zogu know a regular who has only ordered through an app?
No. Their first call is a normal phone order. From the next one, Zogu greets them by name and can repeat what they had.
How much does Zogu cost?
We haven't set a price yet. When we do, it goes into line H of the sum.
