Zogu for UK takeaways

A caller rings your shop and Zogu takes the order from the menu in your POS, reads it back once and sends it to your till on a yes. As of 5 November 2026 it has only taken test calls: there are no UK numbers yet, and no UK shop uses it.

For a whole call, see how Zogu takes a phone order. In the US, see Zogu for US restaurants.

Your number and your line

Each shop gets its own Zogu number, answered with your menu, hours and greeting. The one number we have so far is a US test number.

  • For a UK 01 or 02 number, Twilio needs your UK business address and a senior person's name and mobile. Its checks can take up to 72 hours, then up to 3 working days.
  • You keep the number on your leaflets and divert it: every call, or only the ones nobody picks up. You can turn the divert off yourself.
  • If a divert sends your shop's number as the caller ID, Zogu skips the welcome-back and asks "What's the best phone number to reach you on?"
  • No real shop's line has been diverted to Zogu yet.

Prices in pounds and pence

Prices come from your POS, and Zogu's own code adds up the total, not the AI model. An order whose total doesn't add up never reaches your POS.

  • £12.50 is "twelve pounds fifty", £1.05 is "one pound and five pence" and 99p is "ninety-nine pence".
  • Nothing is added to your prices except your delivery fee: no VAT, no service charge.
  • Orders go into your POS to be paid on pickup or on delivery, and the read-back says which.

Postcodes and delivery areas

On a delivery, Zogu asks for the postcode first and checks it against your delivery areas.

  • An area is a district (M14) or a sector (M14 5). M1 doesn't catch M14.
  • Each area has its own fee and minimum: "Great, we deliver there. Delivery is three pounds fifty, with a minimum order of twenty pounds. What can I get for you?"
  • Outside your areas it offers pickup. Under the minimum it says how far off the caller is.
  • The address is said back once, in the final read-back.

Delivery has only been tested in our test suite, because the test shop takes pickup only. More on how pickup and delivery orders work.

The voice callers hear

The words are British already ("Delivery, lovely. What's the postcode?"). The accent isn't settled.

  • Every test call has used Luna, which Deepgram lists as American.
  • Two of the 40 English voices, Pandora and Draco, are listed as British. Neither has been tried on a call.
  • Hard dish names are respelled for the voice, such as "jah-jik" for cacik. Nobody has checked these by ear on a call yet.
  • Your own pronunciations can be set on the Teach page.

UK GDPR and call records

Every greeting says it's the automated ordering assistant. Asked for a person, Zogu says it can't connect them and carries on with the order.

  • No audio is recorded. Each call is kept as text, with the caller's number, name, any delivery address and the order.
  • It never asks for card details.
  • Only our team can see these records for now. Shops don't have a login yet.

The plan is that your shop is the controller and Zogu the processor. Before any UK shop goes live we still have to set how long records are kept, register with the ICO, have our terms and data processing agreement checked by a UK solicitor, and choose a safeguard for each transfer of call data out of the UK. Details will be in our UK privacy policy and on AI disclosure and call transcripts. More on the FAQ page.

Where call data is processed

Call data does leave the UK, which counts as an international transfer under UK GDPR. We haven't chosen the safeguards yet.

Your kind of takeaway

Each page says how far we've tested Zogu on that kind of menu.

Burger and fried chicken shops

Our test shop sells burgers, wraps and kebabs, so this is where Zogu has had the most practice.

Kebab shops and Turkish takeaways

The same test menu has doners. "A doner kebab" gets lamb, mixed or chicken as a choice.

Pizza takeaways

Tested only on a small pizza menu we wrote. "Twelve inch margherita" finds MARGHERITA 12".

Indian takeaways and curry houses

No Indian menu has been tested yet. Pronunciations for dishes such as bhuna and rogan josh haven't been checked by ear.

Chinese takeaways

No Chinese menu has been through Zogu, and it doesn't match menu numbers ("a 27 and two 41s").

Fish and chip shops

No chippy menu has been tried yet. Size questions and shop words ("fries" meaning chips) carry over from our tests.

Questions and answers

Does Zogu speak Welsh, or any language other than English?

No. It speaks English only, and apologises in English to a caller using another language.

Who pays for a diverted call?

Normally you do: your line provider charges for the leg to your Zogu number, and some charge a monthly divert fee, so check your tariff. The caller pays what they'd pay for any call to your shop.

Does Zogu work with my till?

It works with Toast, Square, Clover, Oracle MICROS RES 3700 and Foodhub. It takes your menu, prices and hours from your POS and sends orders straight back into it.
